Jan 25,  · Miguel, I haven’t read the book, so only going on Bryan’s excerpts. But if ‘common sense’ is “the idea that individuals should not attack, kill, steal from, or defraud one another” then I would argue that there are not “so few societies” built on it, but that it is the norm for all societies, formal and informal. It is not surprising, in exploring what was obvious to the skilled person, that tensions arise between the urge to invoke “common sense”, the danger of being influenced by hindsight knowledge of the claimed subject matter, and the need for evidence before one finds a duly issued claim invalid.

May 10,  · A claim to possess the common sense about a matter rarely ends a debate; more often it has acted as a pivot for violent disagreements as each side mobilizes its version of self-evident truth. But while common sense often plays a polarizing role in ideological debate, it may simultaneously be, as Rosenfeld writes, "the lifeblood of democracy."Author: Susan Dunn. Apr 13,  · Some advertisements skip the “pulling on our heartstrings” methodology and instead, appeal to our rational thought. These appeals rely heavily on facts, statistics, features and benefits in the hopes that simple common sense will sway consumers. Car manufacturers, smartphone brands and healthcare products typically use this form of appeal.

Who Was Thomas Reid and Why Does His “Common Sense” Philosophy Still Matter? Reid's Official Portrait Thomas Reid (April 10, – October 7, ) is best known as the founder and principal philosopher of “common sense,” or more properly, “Scottish Common Sense Realism” (SCSR). Reid was highly respected and quite influential in the days of the eighteenth century Scottish. The page numbers of this version of the book were my invention, for ease in reading the HTML document. The page numbers can more accurately be called paragraph numbers. They match the paragraph numbers in the edited text of ‘Common Sense’ from the National Humanities Center. In one case, the text refers to page forty (see our Page ). We.
